Hackers behind Euler Finance exploit indicate they may be ready to negotiate return of $180 million stolen from the protocol,
The Euler hackers notified the team via blockchain messages to set up a private conversation. The message reads, “We want to make it easy for everyone affected. We have no intention of keeping what is not ours. Establishing secure communications. Let’s come to an agreement.
After receiving the message, the team replied, asking about the hackers’ preferred channel for communication.
$1 million bounty on offer
On 16 March, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Euler Finance, Michael Bentley, announced A $1 million reward “for any information leading to the identification and apprehension of the assailant.”
Then on Sunday, Euler Finance received a blockchain message from someone who claimed to have found “a solid string of connections.”
The message says “Good day Euler team, I believe I’ve found a solid string of connections that may help you find where and who the exploiter is, at least a specific exploiter tag/label belongs to. An email has already been sent to you from my skiff account regarding FNLN which starts with Z and ends with E. The already submitted should be sufficient for your success – feel free to email Reach me or block the chat.”
Hackers link to Lazarus Group
After stealing over $180 million from the protocol on March 13, hackers returned 3,000 Ethereum (ETH) in batches of 1,000 ETH.
The hackers also transferred 100 ETH to a user on Euler, who returned the funds to the protocol. The most infamous activity of the hackers is sending 100 ETH to the Lazarus Group, a cybercrime organization backed by the North Korean government.
Lazarus Group carried out the $620 million Ronin Bridge attack last year. In January, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that the Lazarus Group was also responsible for the $100 million Harmony Bridge attack.
