Smart contract bug bounty platform Immunefi banned 15 people for allegedly submitting bug reports created by generative artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT.
The whitehat hacker bounty platform stressed that ChatGPT cannot identify bugs because it has no technical capabilities beyond providing answers to human inquiries.
ChatGPT should not replace WhiteHat Reports
According to Immunofi, whitehats can accelerate a quick resolution of a software bug by describing the problem in their own words instead of artificial intelligence language tools.
Immunefi is a bug bounty platform that rewards whitehats for finding issues with the smart contracts powering decentralized finance projects like Aave, Compound, and Synthetix. As of September 2022, the platform had paid WhiteHat $65 million, with an additional $138 million available for future payments.
Software project owners hire whitehats to ethically test the security of their product in exchange for a reward. These “good” hackers are compared to blackhats, who take criminal advantage of security flaws. On the other hand, the so-called GreyHats find bugs without the permission of the project owner.
Nevertheless, the bounty platform said that any genuine bugs highlighted by the tool should be reported through proper channels.
ChatGPT uses a large language model called GPT-3 to naturally interact with humans. Its ace card is the ability to answer questions by focusing more on the intent than on the words of a question. For context, mainstream search engines generally rank results according to the quantity and quality of links to a web page.
By its own admission, ChatGPT’s sometimes biased training data means that its answers often lack common sense and context. Furthermore, its expression can sometimes embellish low-quality information. A moderator of the programming forum StackOverflow recently confirmed that the tool’s polished presentation often successfully hides wrong answers.
Like Immunefi, StackOverflow banned ChatGPT responses from its platform.
Despite these obvious limitations, the chief executive of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is confident the tool will grow into a capable workplace tool.
In a blog post last year, Sam Altman said, “We can imagine an ‘AI office worker’ who makes requests in human-like natural language.” Smart contract auditing platform CertiK noted that the platform was not ‘half-bad’ at finding bugs. At the same time, Canadian software engineer Tomiwa Aswamidum reportedly successfully used the tool to create a crypto wallet by teaching it cryptographic rules.
